Amphitrite

Malmö, Sweden
2024-

Malmö’s new university building, Amphitrite, supports the city’s ambition to become an international center of knowledge. The proposal, Warehouse for Knowledge, integrates parts of the existing historic warehouse with a new structure whose industrially inspired exterior references the area’s heritage. A circular atrium and clearly defined entrances create accessible, functional spaces for both students and the public.

The building will serve as a hub on Universitetsholmen, connecting several university faculties through shared public areas and learning environments, including lecture halls used across the institution. It will also house Malmö University’s Faculty of Odontology, with dedicated teaching and administrative spaces. The ground floor opens toward the city and the waterfront, establishing a new active meeting place supported by the surrounding outdoor areas along the adjoining quay.

The design for the new university building and dental school in Malmö includes terrazzo facades made with reclaimed material from the previous building on the site.

The terrazzo was developed in close collaboration with the developer and contractor to stay true to the original intent. Over six months of iterative testing, the team focused on achieving a material expression that works both from a distance and up close.

Förstberg Ling is working in collaboration with C.F. Möller Architects and Think Softer for the project.
