House in a horse field

Sweden
2022 - 2023

On the top of a sloping field once used for horses, the site offers a panoramic view towards the second largest lake in Sweden, Vättern. The proposed house, informed by rural farm buildings, is placed to offer views of the lake and of a majestic tree by the road leading up to the house.

The way the house sits on the site allows for the rooms to be arranged in a sequence of stepped levels that follows the sloping ground.

The main house is accompanied by two additional structures, a flexible outhouse and a walled garden. The later creating a more intimate exterior environment in contrast to the panorama views from the house.

At the centre of the house a heavy vertical core contains the stairwell and wet rooms. The core works as an anchor, both structurally and visually in relation to the spaces around it. The surrounding rooms sit on different levels in relation to the core creating a division in levels within the larger spaces.
